Are Billboards Really Dying? What We’re Observing on Indian Roads

A lot of ad agencies once predicted that the era of billboards would come to an end. With the rise of smartphones and social media, it was widely assumed that outdoor advertising would lose its relevance. Even today, many people believe that digital screens have completely replaced physical visibility.

But what we are observing on the ground tells a different story.

Every month, the number of vehicles on the road is increasing. Traffic is becoming heavier, commute times are getting longer, and people are spending more time outside than before. In this environment, billboards are not disappearing they are multiplying. New hoardings are coming up across highways, city entries, flyovers and even smaller junctions.

From our perspective, billboards are now getting more attention than before. When people are stuck in traffic or moving slowly through busy roads, large-format visuals naturally catch their eye. Unlike social media, where content is skipped within seconds, billboards exist in physical space you cannot scroll past them.

Another point worth noting is the pricing. Billboard rents in many locations are increasing, not decreasing. This suggests that demand is still strong, even if the narrative says otherwise. Brands continue to invest in outdoor advertising, especially in high-visibility areas where repeated exposure builds recall over time.

This does not mean billboards have replaced digital marketing. Instead, what we are seeing is a shift in how both coexist. Social media offers speed and targeting, while billboards offer physical presence and repeated visibility. One is not replacing the other they are serving different purposes.

From our observation, the assumption that “billboards are dying” may not be entirely accurate. In fact, in a country like India, where road density and urban movement are constantly increasing, outdoor advertising might still have strong relevance.
